Could ‘Lichen Planopilaris’ Be The Root of Your Hair Loss Problems?

Follicular Lichen Planus (aka Lichen Planopilaris) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the scalp. Lichen Planopilaris may cause permanent hair loss and scarring due to primary Cicatricial Alopecia.

What Is Lichen Planopilaris?

Lichen planopilaris is a hair loss condition that develops after a skin disease [known as Lichen Planus] affects skin areas where there's hair.

This hair condition destroys hair follicles and replaces them with scarring. The common sign of this hair condition is hair loss happening in patches.

The damaged hair follicles are inflamed, reddish, and scaly. It's also quite itchy and burns. But some sufferers tend not to feel any of these symptoms.

The Different Types of Lichen Planopilaris

Lichen planopilaris has three subtypes:

  • Classic Lichen Planopilaris: leaves a patch on the scalp
  • Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: causes receding hairlines, scarring towards the scalp’s frontal and affects the eyebrows
  • Graham Little Syndrome: causes Cicatricial Alopecia and results in permanent hair loss and non-scarring alopecia on other body parts.

While the cause of this disease is unclear, it operates the same way other hair diseases do. You know, like inflamed follicles, scarring, and hair loss.

So, What Can You Do About It?

No specific cure for Lichen Planopilaris exists yet, but some treatments help relieve the symptoms and slow down the disease’s impact. If you detect the disease and treat it early enough, it's far better than when it becomes permanent.

But even when hair loss is permanent, you can still consider non-surgical hair transplants. Need to relieve the symptoms of this hair condition or believe you’re at risk? You’re just one consultation away.
